History of Panchakki Aurangabad

Panchakki Aurangabad Maharashtra, is a mysterious and historical monument. It was constructed by the Sufi saint Baba Shah Musafir.

He dug 30 feet underground from the Jatwada hills, located about 6 km from Aurangabad, to channel the spring water to the Panchakki through underground pipes. However, the exact method of how this water was transported underground remains a mystery to this day.

Built around 300 years ago, this Panchakki still works without the use of electricity or motors. This Vastu is a masterpiece of Mughal scientific thought and architecture.

Earlier, one and a half hundred kilos of grains used to be ground in this Panchakki. Baba Shah Musafir used to solicit donations of grain from rich people, which he would grind at Panchakki and then organize communal meals for people of all religions.

Saint Baba Shah Musafir died in 1698 and his nephew died in 1714.

Baba Shah Musafir passed away, and after his death, the water mill was used to grind grain for the pilgrims, his disciples, and the army stationed on guard duty.

In 1744, Raja Shah Mahmud of Ichalpur, who was a devotee of Baba Shah Musafir, sold his royal palace and spent about 2 lakh rupees to restore the watermill at Aurangabad.

Even today, out of the 52 gates in the city, the gate in front of the water mill in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar is known as Mahmud Darwaza. Aurangabad watermills are a major tourist attraction, offering a unique glimpse of history and architecture.
