• The current city of Chhatrapati Sambhaji was formerly known as “Rajtadak.”.
• Because of this, the Aurangabad city region is likewise built on basalt rock.
• Earlier there was a very ancient Khadakeshwar temple of Mahadev Shivshankar in this area, which is there today.
• Historians claim that the city was named Khadki after the same Khadkeshwar temple at the time and that this temple was the catalyst for the creation of Khadki.
• After Malik Ambar Raja’s son Fateh Khan became king in 1633, he changed the name of Khadki City to “Fatehnagar”.
• Over time, the name also changed, and the city became known as Aurangabad.
• In 1653, when Aurangzeb came to Fatehnagar as Subhadar of the Deccan Division to settle the Marathas, he changed the name of Fatehnagar to ‘Khujista Buniyad’.
• Aurangzeb eventually fell ill and died in 1707 in Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra.
• Aurangzeb’s son wanted his tomb to be next to his mentor Syed Zainuddin Siraji, so his tomb was built at Khultabad in Aurangabad.
• Some historians believe that after Aurangzeb’s death, the city’s name may have been popularized as Aurangabad.

How did Aurangabad district get its name Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar?

Chhatrapati Sambhaji Raja died on 11 March 1689 while in Aurangzeb’s custody.

Since then, the Maratha community repeatedly demanded to change the name of Aurangabad district to Sambhajinagar.

In his tenure, former Chief Minister Balasaheb Thackeray approved the new name of Aurangabad city as Sambhajinagar on the 22nd of June 2022.

Then on July 16, 2022, after Eknath Shinde became Chief Minister, he announced to rename Aurangabad as Sambhajinagar. The city was renamed “Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar” as well.

Hon’ble Narendra Modi Government also approved this decision on 24 February 2023.
